RISE Camp for High School Students
The College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Texas at Tyler, in collaboration with the East Texas STEM Center and the UT Tyler Gear-Up Program, is offering a one week residential summer camp for high school students interested in engineering.
This camp provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for young engineers and scientists to design an experiment to collect data from the atmosphere using instruments launched as payloads on high altitude balloons, the same sort used for meteorological purposes. Students will determine the experiment they wish to conduct, determine the required data, and design, assemble and test the instruments needed to collect this information. At a later date, these experiments will actually be conducted during a balloon launch which students may attend.
In addition to these activities, faculty from the College of Engineering and Computer Science will conduct workshops introducing students to career and educational opportunities. Advising staff and student mentors will discuss appropriate preparation for college and STEM related careers.
Students will discover and explore life on a college campus and have fun participating in recreational evening activities. Parents and students will have an opportunity to share the students’ projects at the conclusion of the camp during a presentation and reception.
Students will be housed on campus at Ornelas Hall, and meals will be provided through residential dining services. Students will check in late Sunday afternoon and will be released Saturday in the early afternoon, following the presentation of their projects at the parent reception.
Young women and minority students are encouraged to apply, and deserving students may apply for scholarships to cover all or part of their tuition for the camp if they need financial assistance to attend.
Students who are currently in 10th, 11th and 12th grade (must have completed their freshman year of high school in May or June 2009 and be at least 15 years of age by camp start date) can apply to be considered by printing and filling out the linked application, students will be notified of acceptance by letter. Deadline to enroll in Summer 2009 camp is pending.
